Fruit….it’s so incredibly good for you and comes in all sorts of varieties so having a fruit allergy pretty much stinks. I have always known that I was allergic to apples however recently found out that I’m also allergic to pineapple and strawberries…UGH! I love all three of these items however my body does NOT. When I eat any of these by lips and tongue tingle, my lips start to burn and my tongue and throat swell. I then have to make this annoying sound to scratch my throat….the easiest way to describe it is to relate it to a hair ball LOL. For whatever reason I can eat these items if they are frozen or processed however in their raw form I have issues. I thought that I would do a little digging and this is what I learned.
People who are allergic to foods is to be considered as having an ‘oral allergy’. This is when the person experiences the itching, tingling, or swelling of the lips, tongue and throat….YES THAT’S ME! The protein found in apples, pineapple and strawberries are very similar to those found in birch pollen (which I’m allergic to) so if you are allergic to one you will probably be allergic to the other. When these foods are cooked the proteins break down therefore allowing you to consume them as apple sauce or baked apples. Again….totally hitting home with me!
So what are my choices. Well I can not eat them which is what I have done or I can get allergy shots for birch. For me I am use to not eating these items therefore I will go about my day and just keep limiting these foods. However if you have these same allergies contact an allergy center or your family physician and discuss the possibility of getting allergy shots.
